Passion for People
Our Cabin Crew team members have a high capacity for caring, as evidenced by their supportive work environment and the great lengths they go to help customers reach their destinations safely. It’s no surprise that their enthusiasm for helping people extends to the communities in which we operate.
Each year we invite our staff to participate in Corporate Social Responsibility activities that support communities in need, from youth-driven programmes that help youngsters to pursue dreams in aviation, to charity visits to support children and the elderly in Nepal and Mainland China. Below you will learn about recent initiatives that our Cabin Crew have volunteered their time to.
Charity flight to Chengdu
In September 2014, a team of 28 volunteers including Cathay Dragon managers, Cabin Crew team members and their families participated in a two-day trip to visit schools in Ya’an City and Lushan County, Chengdu, which had been rebuilt after a devastating earthquake.
Our team engaged students through a live safety demonstration, followed by an informative discussion about the role of Cabin Crew. Outside the classroom, team members taught the students some valuable lessons about teamwork through a ‘ten-legged race’ and a basketball game. It was a highly successful and educational trip.
“The Chengdu charity flight opened my eyes and gave me the opportunity to explore other areas in Sichuan province. After the devastation of the earthquake, the locals did not give up and their rebuilding efforts have led to great success. I learned a lot about faith and care, and am thankful to have participated.” – Flight Attendant, Kevin Lam
Charity flight to Bangalore
During October 2014, our CSR team visited two charity organisations that support the homeless – Asha Deep, which retrieves and protects young girls found living on the streets, and the Bangalore Friend In Need Society, which provides a home to destitute aged people.
In addition to spending quality time with the young children and elderly, the team brought over 40 bags of donated items including toys, clothing, stationeries, Cathay Dragon souvenirs and fun packs, and hundreds of elementary English books.
“I still remember the way that one of the elderly burst into tears when we gave her the goodies. It was very touching. I am really grateful to have been a part of something so meaningful and memorable” – Flight Attendant, Hugo Lo.
“It was great to see the children’s interest in and curiosity about the aviation industry and our occupations. We could feel their eagerness to learn just by looking into their earnest eyes. They are indeed children of ‘Hope’. I will keep the memory of this special ‘training’ in my heart and share this invaluable experience with my daughters and other loved ones.” – Inflight Services Manager, Wink Lam.
‘I Can Fly’ Summer Camp
Cathay Dragon crew members were proud to team up with Cathay Pacific employees for the ‘I Can Fly’ Youth Aviation Summer Camp, held in Hong Kong in August 2014.
The three-night camp offered 60 Mainland students from less privileged backgrounds some great insight into the aviation industry. It presented them with a rare opportunity to visit facilities such as the HAECO maintenance facility, Cathay Pacific Catering Services and the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal. It also offered valuable lessons about flight operations and cabin service.
A student from Sanya said, “Through the training sessions and the summer camp I learned more about what pilots, cabin crew, engineers and other service providers are working on. This programme has strengthened my interest in the aviation industry!”
